- 4 slices sandwich bread
- 4 slices Cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice.
Place two bread slices butter-side down and top each with 2 slices of Cheddar cheese.
Place the remaining bread slices on top, with the buttered sides facing up.
Heat a skillet over medium-low heat.
Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp.
Carefully flip and cook for another 3–4 minutes, until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
If the bread is browning too quickly, reduce the heat and continue cooking until the cheese melts.
Transfer to a cutting board, let cool for 1 minute, then slice and serve warm.
- Sharp, mild, or blended Cheddar can be used.
- American cheese, Gruyère, Brie, Fontina, Gouda, Pepper Jack, and Havarti are also delicious choices.
- Cook over medium-low heat so the cheese has time to melt before the bread becomes too dark.
- Sourdough, white sandwich bread, or country-style bread all work well.
